Grant Writing for NGO Startup – South Africa
23 May, 2024

Project Overview :
The Ubuntu Youth Development Foundation (UYDF), a newly established NGO in Johannesburg, sought funding to launch programs aimed at equipping disadvantaged youth with vocational skills and entrepreneurship training. They approached TIRD to help craft a compelling grant proposal that could attract both local and international funders.
Our Approach :
- Needs Assessment: Conducted a rapid community needs analysis to strengthen the proposal’s evidence base.
- Program Design: Worked with the client to refine their training model, target outcomes, and monitoring framework.
- Grant Writing: Developed a persuasive, results-focused proposal tailored to the requirements of three major funding bodies.
- Budget Planning: Created a detailed, donor-compliant budget that aligned with the program’s operational needs.
- Donor Strategy: Advised the NGO on outreach methods, including crafting an introductory email and pitch deck for potential partners.
Our Outcome :
Within three months, UYDF secured a $75,000 startup grant from an international development agency. The NGO successfully launched its first vocational training cohort, enrolling 80 young people in various trades and entrepreneurial skills programs.
